Traffic Simulation for All: A Real World Traffic Scenario from the City of Bologna

Abstract: It is time consuming to set up a realistic traffic simulation scenario. Even though data is available, a large effort is needed to gather, convert and adapt all the data needed to replicate a part of a real road network. Available road networks usually have to be corrected and adapted to the used simulation model. The demand has to be converted or even generated using given measurements. The measurements must be imported into the simulation system's architecture to allow the models' calibration and validation.… Show more

“…This paper conceptually differs from our work since it is proposing a general anticipatory routing solution for vehicles, while our paper focus on vehicular rerouting problem after road blocks occur. The concepts and ideas presented in the works of Krajzewicz [26], Behrisch et al [27] and Bieker et al [28] aided us immensely in our study. These papers extensively discuss microscopic vehicular traffic simulation concepts considering larger traffic regions with significant number of vehicles circulating.…”

“…The above scenario is a small-scale scenario based on the city of Bologna [23], and its traffic flow is obtained from the statistical data of local real traffic flow. The congestion of each vehicle is equivalent to the number of its data packets that need to be forwarded.…”

“…In 2014, during the SUMO User Conference, a realistic traffic scenario from the city of Bologna [8] was released to the community. The scenario, built in the iTETRIS [9] framework, gives a very good starting point for the community, but it presents some limitations.…”
