Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to radically change a wide range of disciplines, including special education. Given the chronic issues with recruitment and retention of personnel involved in services for people with disabilities, automating professional development and training represents a promising application of AI. However, powerful technologies such as AI often produce adverse or unintended consequences. This chapter discusses the ethical implications of a line of research involving the integration of AI into immersive virtual reality (VR)— ‘smart' VR—designed to teach practitioners a research-based behavior intervention for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Specific sections describe the impetus and potential advantages of smart VR, delineate the development and evaluation of the training, and identify concerns related to the use of similar applications in special education.
