Trans-Scleral Plugs Fixated FIL SSF IOL: A Review of the Literature and Comparison with Other Secondary IOL Implants

Abstract: Purpose. To revise the current literature on FIL SSF (Carlevale) intraocular lens, previously known as Carlevale lens, and to compare their outcomes with those from other secondary IOL implants. Methods. We performed a peer review of the literature regarding FIL SSF IOLs until April 2021 and analyzed the results only of articles with a minimum of 25 cases and a follow-up of at least 6 months. The searches yielded 36 citations, 11 of which were abstracts of meeting presentations that were not included in the an… Show more

“…The strong fixation of the T-shaped caps seems to justify the good stability of the lens with a lower risk of tilt and an easier and faster surgical time [32,48]. Moreover, the similar outcomes obtained across several studies suggest a good reproducibility and standardization of this technique [53].…”

“…Consequently, this surgical technique also appears to be feasible for anterior segment surgeons after adequate training [ 9 , 20 , 22 , 53 ], as we counted very few adverse retinal events, even when a vitrectomy was not performed [ 21 , 25 ].…”

“…Thus, it can remain in a centered position without interfering with other structures such as the iris. For this reason, it has less potential side effects than previously reported with other options such as the iris claw lenses (e.g., cystoid macular edema, pigment dispersion, iridodonesis, blurred vision when leaning forward) [ 8 - 11 ]. This option can also be considered superior to an intrascleral fixation of a three-piece IOL due to less post-operative astigmatism and reduced tilting or dislocation and bleeding [ 11 , 12 ].…”

This option can also be considered superior to an intrascleral fixation of a three-piece IOL due to less post-operative astigmatism and reduced tilting or dislocation and bleeding [11,12]. Another advantage is that there is an option for a toric FIL SSF lens which can provide an even better refractive outcome.…”
