Transabdominal pre-peritoneal mesh in inguinal hernia repair in elderly: end point of our experience

Abstract: BackgroundAim of this study is to present our standardized laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal hernia repair (TAPP) technique, and to study our experience in the elderly as far as concerns preoperative and postoperative variables.MethodsWe described our standardized TAPP technique according with Stuttgart technique [1], and we evalutated our team's experience in TAPP inguinal hernia repair in elderly (> 65 yrs) and in young patients (< 65 yrs).ResultsWe retrospectively reviewed our Surgery Division's exp… Show more

“…No reports regarding the outcome of the endoscopic TEP technique in the selection of elderly patients were available in the literature. A 3.2 % re-operation rate for TAPP hernia repair in elderly older than 65 years was reported by Farrese et al [20]. In a meta-analysis regarding outcome after laparoscopic versus open inguinal hernia repair, a relative risk of 1.22 on intra-operative complications was seen in those undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair [21].…”

“…[13] in 2010 defined the major risk factor for B-VL in cholecystectomy, which includes surgeon’s experience based on a correct learning curve. In accord with Parmeggiani, we believe that the utilization of a standardized technique is at the base of each surgical procedure; every rule must be followed carefully with the aim of obtain the best results in terms of lowest risk rate [14–19]. Every complex procedure and an emergency situation may lead to unintended injury and be unrecognized.…”

“… 2 Although several comparative studies have investigated the outcome impact of laparoscopic hernia repair in the elderly, comparisons between the middle-old/old-old (≥75 years) and younger populations are still scarce in the literature. 7 , 9 , 10 Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the outcome impact of laparoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) repair in elderly patients needing groin hernia repair.…”
