Transarterial embolization of renal tumors improves surgical outcomes: A case series

Abstract: HighlightsOur study shows transarterial embolization had a decreased in blood loss.TAE allowed high stage tumors of greater average size to be removed.Time to surgery post embolization varied from several hours to one day.

“…At the first time, RAE was primarily used to treat unresectable symptomatic renal cancer. Currently, the indications for RAE have considerably expanded including renal trauma, renal tumours, iatrogenic complications, and medical renal disease [ 7 ] [ 8 ]. The advantages of RAE in the preoperative setting include a decrease in perioperative blood loss, the creation of a tissue plane of oedema, facilitating dissection, and reduction in tumour bulk including the extent of vascular thrombus [ 4 ].…”

“…33 Other measures such as operative blood loss and duration of surgery have similarly shown mixed results. 28,34,35 A recent small case series demonstrated a new approach to zero ischemia partial nephrectomy with the use of a hybrid operating room for same-day preoperative RAE and surgery. 36 The role of preoperative RAE may be further defined, as variations on technique such as this are explored.…”

“…Selective arterial embolization (SAE) is a widely studied method for decreasing the vascularity and volume of renal malignancies, thereby facilitating subsequent complete surgical tumor excision and limiting intraoperative bleeding [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. In a nested matched case-control study, survival in 118 patients who underwent renal artery embolization before nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma was 62% and 47% at 5 and 10 years, respectively, compared with 35% and 23% in 116 patients without pre-operative embolization [ 22 ].…”
