Transcatheter closure of multiple interatrial communications

Abstract: Percutaneous closure of multiple interatrial communications is feasible and safe. Importantly, many residual defects close without further intervention at FU. Therefore, staged device delivery is an alternative to simultaneous device implantation, possibly requiring fewer and smaller second devices.

“…Following verification of good position of both devices, the smaller device should first be released followed by release of larger device. Use of 2 Amplatzer devices to close 2 ASDs at the same time has been reported by a number of authors including our group . Similarly, use of 3 Amplatzer devices to close 3 ASDs at the same time has also been reported .…”

“…Staged device delivery is a reported alternative to simultaneous device implantation in transcatheter closure of multiple ASDs . Although simultaneous device deployment of three Amplatzer devices for multiple ASDs has been reported, to our knowledge, our report is the first case of transcatheter ASD closure using four devices under a staged device delivery strategy with three‐dimensional echocardiography guidance.…”

“…On the other hand, additional defect(s) that is/are not hemodynamically important may not be closed if it is not clinically required or if the remaining defect(s) may potentially close automatically in the future 14). While a PFO occluder was implanted in 1 case and double ASO implantation was made in 2 cases during the same session in Group 1, double ASO implantation was made in 2 cases during the same session in Group 3.…”
