Transcranial direct current stimulation in psychiatric disorders

Abstract: The interest in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques is increasing in recent years. Among these techniques, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been the subject of great interest among researchers because of its easiness to use, low cost, benign profile of side effects and encouraging results of research in the field. This interest has generated several studies and randomized clinical trials, particularly in psychiatry. In this review, we provide a summary of the development of the techniqu… Show more

“…A number of techniques for therapeutic brain stimulation are entering clinical use for treatment-resistant psychiatric illnesses. These include deep brain stimulation (DBS; Lozano and Lipsman, 2013), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS; Lefaucheur et al, 2014) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS; Tortella et al, 2015). …”

“…While still in relatively early stages, tDCS is thought to work via short-term modulation of membrane potential (8183) with longer-term effects due to changes in synaptic connectivity (84). In patients with schizophrenia, there have been efforts to use tDCS to modify specific symptoms, such as auditory hallucinations (85).…”

“…Recently, neuromodulation therapy has been clinically recommended for treating cognitive deficits in psychiatric disorders [64][65][66][67][68]. Our results in this study may suggest that prefrontal modulation in OD patients might be treated by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a dental clinic.…”
