“…Several studies have described reductions of tic severity by repetitive TMS over the SMA, [47][48][49] although there is no consensus. 50 Bäumer et al 51 found abnormal functional interhemispheric connectivity in TS accompanied by an altered structure-function relationship in the motor corpus callosum in a combined TMS and diffusion-tensor MRI study with stimuli in hand muscles.…”

“…In TD patients, the SMA has been linked to tic generation and sensory premonitory urges (Bohlhalter et al, 2006;Hampson et al, 2009). Additionally, multiple studies showed that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the SMA was effective to reduce tic symptoms (Kwon et al, 2011;Le et al, 2013;Mantovani et al, 2006Mantovani et al, , 2007. LRPs are also generated partly by the SMA (Rektor, 2002), and since we found a reduction in tics frequency, as well as improvements of rLRP peak amplitude, we propose that our treatment induced a physiological modification in the functioning of the SMA and probably on the top down neural mechanisms involved in the control of tics.…”

“…Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), inducing an electric current in cortical regions via a pulsed magnetic field, has been shown to be efficient in tic reduction when applied at 1 Hz over the supplementary motor area (SMA; Mantovani et al, 2006). In children, positive results lasted at least 6 months (Le et al, 2013). However these studies were open label without sham control.…”
