Transcriptomic Insights into the Antifungal Effects of Magnolol on the Growth and Mycotoxin Production of Alternaria alternata

Abstract: Alternaria alternata is an important phytopathogen causing fruit black rot and also producing a variety of mycotoxins, such as alternariol (AOH) and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME) as two main contaminants. This could lead to economic losses of agricultural products as well as human health risks. In this study, magnolol extracted from the traditional Chinese herb, Mangnoliaofficinalis, exhibited an obvious antifungal property and could completely suppress the mycelial growth at 100 μM. Morphological differe… Show more

“…Phenolic compounds can also interact with the gene involved in regulating oxidative stress. For instance, magnolol (a lignan; Table S3) inhibits the production of alternariol by increasing the gene expression of the enzymes involved in oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and peroxidase) by A. alternata (Wang, Wang, et al., 2020). A similar observation was made on A. carbonarius cultures supplemented with a polyphenol‐rich grape skin extract that inhibits OTA production.…”

“…alternata was grown on medium containing magnolol, the mycelial growth of A . alternata was inhibited, and the hyphae became shrunken and wrinkled because of changes in cell permeability by the impairment of plasma membranes [ 36 , 40 ]. In addition, it has been reported that magnolol causes a significant decrease in the production of Alternaria mycotoxins (e.g., alternariol, alternariol monomethyl ether, and tenuazonic acid) and in the transcription level of genes involved in their biosynthesis [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…Alternaria alternata is well known as a producer of various mycotoxins, including alternariol (AOH); alternariol monomethyl ether (AME); altenuene (AE); altertoxins I, II and III; tenuazonic acid (TeA); and tentoxin (TEN) [ 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 ]. AOH and AME were reported as mutagenic and genotoxic [ 168 ].…”
