Transdisciplinary case studies as a means of sustainability learning

Abstract: Purpose -This paper aims at presenting the theoretical concepts of the transdisciplinary case study approach (TCS), which is a research and teaching approach developed and elaborated at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), as a means of transition support. Design/methodology/approach -The paper reveals the historical roots of case studies, transdisciplinarity and sustainable development as teaching and research paradigms. The TCS approach is presented, which has been developed at ETH for supporting… Show more

“…Thus, it is intended to support the creation of new ways of low resources individual lifestyles. It, thus, refers to a variety of approaches of transition and action orientated research, such as [21][22][23][24][25][26]. The material footprint as a method for calculating the natural resource use of households is briefly described in Section 2.1.…”

“…In general Td has been stated differently, whether focusing on philosophical reflection, critique, or the role of science in society where interdisciplinary research occurs when there is collaboration between academics, whereas transdisciplinarity involves cooperation with nonacademics (Balsiger, 2004;Lang et al, 2012;Scholz et al, 2006;Stauffacher et al, 2006). Meanwhile, Thomson Klein (2004; noting the increasing of Td approaches, proposed three aroused major discourses on Td: transcendence, problem solving, and transgression.…”

“…Transdisciplinarity (Td), however, goes one step further in the science/society interface (Muhar et al, 2013;Scholz et al, 2006;Vilsmaier, 2008). The objective is no longer the search for consensus but the search for articulations, preserving the different realities and confronting them in a controlled way.…”

“…Case studies focus on examples of sustainability issues and possible solutions to them. They can use fictive cases, use "authentic" documents as teaching material, or even tackle real cases which the project courses try to help resolve [24]. The advantages of this starting point for both students and teachers consist in the motivation gained from specific, practical questions, the additional benefit regarding real-world issues, and the possibility of offering active project work.…”
