There is an increasing concern over arsenic (As) contamination in rice. This study was conducted to develope a prediction model for As uptake by rice based on the physico-chemical properties of soil. Soil and brown rice samples were collected from 46 sites in paddy fields near three different areas of closed mines and industrial complexes. Total As concentration, soil pH, Al oxide, available phosphorus (avail-P), organic matter (OM) content, and clay content in the soil samples were determined. Also, 1.0 N HCl, 1.0 M NH 4 NO 3 , 0.01 M Ca(NO 3 ) 2 , and Mehlich 3 extractable-As in the soils were measured as phytoavailable As concentration in soil. Total As concentration in brown rice samples was also determined. Relationships among As concentrations in brown rice, total As concentrations in soils, and selected soil properties were as follows: As concentration in brown rice was negatively correlated with soil pH value, where as it was positively correlated with Al oxide concentration, avail-P concentration, and OM content in soil. In addition, the concentration of As in brown rice was statistically correlated only with 1.0 N HCl-extractable As in soil. Also, using multiple stepwise regression analysis, a modelling equation was created to predict As concentration in brown rice as affected by selected soil properties including soil As concentration. Prediction of As uptake by rice was delineated by the model [As in brown rice = 0.352 + 0.00109 * HCl extractable As in soil + 0.00002 * Al oxide + 0.0097 * OM + 0.00061 * avail-P -0.0332 * soil pH] (R = 0.714 *** ). The concentrations of As in brown rice estimated by the modelling equation were statistically acceptable because normalized mean error (NME) and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) values were -0.055 and 0.2229, respectively, when compared with measured As concentration in the plant.

The effects of the physicochemical properties of soil such as soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and organic matter content on single extraction of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn using CaCl 2 , HOAc, HNO 3 , and DTPA were statistically investigated for 69 agricultural soils in Korea. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied for soil samples which were grouped on the basis of average values of the physicochemical properties of the soil. Diluted HNO 3 extracted higher concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb when compared with the other extractants, however, similar amounts of Cd and Zn were extracted by HOAc with HNO 3 . The results of correlation analysis indicated that DTPA extraction showed a high correlation with other single and pseudo-total extraction methods, and the physicochemical properties of soil influenced the concentrations of heavy metals leached by the single extraction methods. In the case of Zn, high correlations between pseudo-total and the studied single extraction methods were observed. As a result of regression analysis, it was found that the physicochemical properties of the soil could explain up to 74% of variances of the single extraction results. These results indicate that the physicochemical properties of the soil can have a direct influence on the concentrations of heavy metals extracted by the single extraction methods.

Differences in Heavy Metal Accumulation in Different Medicinal Plants in Association with Lime Application

This study examined variation in Cd and Pb uptake among different medi cinal plants grown under the same soil environment together with immobilizing effect of lime to decrease these metals accumulation by the medicinal plants. For this, lime was incorporated into a heavy metal-contaminated soil at 1% followed by cultivation of seven different annual and 5 different biennial medicinal plants. In order for comparison, control soil without lime treatment was included and all the pot trials were carried out four replicates. Cadmium and Pb concentrations in medicinal plant roots grown in the control soil varied between 0.5 and 2.8 mg kg -1 for Cd and 3.2 and 82.4 mg kg -1 for Pb. The highest accumulation occurred in C. officinale and the lowest in D. batatas. Lime application decreased average Cd and Pb concentrations in the examined medicinal plants from 1.3 mg kg -1 and 25.7 mg kg -1 to 0.6 mg kg -1 and 11.9 mg kg -1 , respectively in comparison with those grown in the control soil.
