Transformation and Plasticity of Shape Memory Alloy Structures: Constitutive Modeling and Finite Element Implementation

Abstract: In this work, we extend a well-known three-dimensional phenomenological shape memory alloy (SMA) constitutive model known as Souza model. The proposed model describes more precisely the hardening behavior observed during forward-and reverse-phase transformation as well as evolution of plastic strain and its effects on transformation behavior. Moreover, we present a solution algorithm for low temperatures and evolution of plastic strains which considerably reduces the computational cost. Through calibration of … Show more

“…The thermodynamic forces X and Q are not defined when e tr w q = 0 or e tr q = 0 . As a result, regularization is used to solve this problem, which has already been used by several researchers such as Arghavani et al (2010), Ashrafi (2020), and Auricchio and Petrini (2004). Finally, the saturation condition is checked; if it is not met, applying the constraint e tr w q = ε L , equation (8) are solved again with the new unknown γ .…”

“…R is the radius of the phase change surface in this relation. Using this model and its numerical algorithm, the UMAT subroutine in ABAQUS software (Ashrafi, 2020) can be used to study the effects of SMA with different pre-strains in various structures.…”
