“…Although buffalo-derived T. parva readily infect cattle, they differentiate poorly to the erythrocytic piroplasm stage and therefore are not readily transmitted by ticks to other cattle ( Neitz, 1957 , Schreuder et al, 1977 , Maritim et al, 1992 ). Given the poor differentiation to tick-transmissible stages in cattle, transmission of these parasites to buffalo is also likely to be highly inefficient.…”

“…Adding to this genetic evidence of separate host-associated populations are several epidemiological clues (reviewed in Morrison et al 2020). These include the fact that tick transmission of buffalo-derived T. parva to other cattle has only been achieved on a few occasions and at low efficiency (Neitz 1957;Maritim et al 1992), and previously described immunological observations that differentiate the two parasites (Radley et al 1979;Radley 1981). The description of new Apicomplexa species based on genetic information alone is controversial (Krief et al 2010;Rayner et al 2011) but not unprecedented (Liu et al 2017), and it has been proposed that species identification based only on DNA characterization would be more efficient, even though inclusion of other data, such as host and geography, when available, is advisable (Cook et al 2010).…”

“…The cattle received 0-5 ml (equivalent to 11 ticks) of the same GUTS subcutaneously in front and above the left parotoid lymph node. A stabilate (ST 199) was made from the same material (Maritim et al 1992).…”

“…These stocks represented two different isolations. The stabilates (ST 199; ST3O18) have been described by Maritim et al (1992). In one experiment (Exp.…”
