Transformative learning experiences in mechanical engineering through mechatronics: From high school to college

Abstract: For many years, educators at all levels have been trying to revamp their teaching styles to optimize the learning process. The availability of new virtual and technical instructional tools has led to significant increase in research in teaching methodologies whose outcome can be split into three categories: (1) lecture delivery, e.g. flipped classroom; (2) interactivity, e.g. instantaneous gathering of students’ feedback; and (3) technology in the classroom, e.g. using clickers and other gadgets. The focus of … Show more

“…Other studies have highlighted that SRSs improve student learning and increases levels of involvement and active participation among university students enrolled in engineering instrumentation and control subjects [33]. Studies involving the use of SRSs in other engineering disciplines such as metrology [71], mechatronics [72], geotechnical engineering [73], engineering dynamics [74] and transportation engineering [75] have also been published.…”

“…The benefits of “hands on” learning is well known, 7 such as by using mechatronics kits. 8 It has also been shown that while computer simulations, such as the animations currently used in ME380, are beneficial, the hands-on experience has greater learning benefits to the students. 9…”

“…When the literature was examined, it was determined that many studies (Southern, 2007;Kerton, & Sinclair, 2010;Kostoulas Makrakis, 2010;Stuckey et al, 2013;Saravanamuthu, 2015;Mogren, & Gericke, 2017;Westoby, & Lyons, 2017;Nada et al, 2018;Sterling et al, 2018;James, 2019;Papenfuss, & Merrit, 2019;Probst et al, 2019;Walshe, & Tait, 2019;Bush et al, 2020;Damianakis et al, 2020;Karkoub, & Abdulla, 2020;Zhu et al, 2020;Shonkoff et al, 2021) have been conducted on transformative learning. For example, Ntiri and Stewart (2009) investigated the effect of transformative learning theory-based practices on functional health literacy and diabetic awareness behaviours in a study in which elderly African-Americans with diabetes were participants.…”
