“…Through autologous blood transfusion systems, allogeneic blood exposure is expected to decrease along with the well-known complications of transfusion reactions through storage-induced mechanisms, allergic reactions, errors in application and administration, immunosuppression and viral contamination (cytomegalovirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B/C) [5][6][7][8][9]. In addition, there are economic considerations and limited supply of allogeneic blood transfusions (ABT).…”

“…8 Blood products used in surgery increase the transmission risk of hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus, parvovirus B19 and human T-lymphotropic virus type I and II. 11 Transfusion also increases the risk of allo-immunization, hemolytic and allergic reactions and transfusion-related acute lung injury. 11 Blood transfusions represent significant financial burden to the healthcare system and methods to reduce its use are warranted.…”

“…Autologous blood units procured by acute normovolemic hemodilution are retransfused before the patient leaves the operating room and therefore require no inventory or testing costs. This practice also eliminates the possibility of an administrative error that could lead to a fatal ABO-incompatible blood transfusion, which now approximates the risk of mortality from HIV or hepatitis transmission from blood transfusion 30,31 . Because acute hemodilution and re-infusion are accomplished in the operating room by on-site personnel, the blood procurement and administration costs are minimized, making acute hemodilution the less expensive method of autologous blood procurement.…”
