Transgenerational effects and acclimation affect dispersal in guppies

Abstract: Evolutionary theory predicts that intergenerational environmental fluctuations lead to transgenerational effects where offspring phenotypes are matched to conditions experienced by previous generations. However, in fluctuating environments, transgenerational effects can be detrimental by causing mismatches between ancestral and offspring environments. Acclimation in offspring could alleviate these negative effects. We determined whether the interaction between transgenerational effects and acclimation affects … Show more

“…Data were analysed with permutational analysis and significant regression lines are shown; data from individual fish are shown; n=25 fish. fitness (Cattarino et al, 2015), and decreased exploration of novel environments in fish with high CoT may also mean that these individuals disperse less (Le Roy and Seebacher, 2018). If CoT is a genetically determined trait, as the high repeatability indicates, differences in CoT between individuals may contribute to genetic structuring of dispersing populations.…”

“…We tested whether there is an association between CoT and movement by measuring locomotor behaviour of fish in an artificial stream (Le Roy and Seebacher, 2018). Firstly, we measured CoT (n=25 fish) as above.…”

“…After measuring U crit , we recorded the movements of fish ( n = 12–13/treatment) in an artificial stream (Le Roy & Seebacher, 2018). Each fish was tested at 18, 28, and 32°C acute test temperatures with 24 hr rest between trials as described above.…”

“…For example, decreased water levels can decrease dissolved oxygen concentrations and increase water temperature, and increased discharge from dams and terrestrial run‐off may lead to altered temperature regimes (Liu et al., 2018, 2020). These environmental changes influence the physiology of aquatic organisms and may thereby modify ecological processes such as dispersal (Jung et al., 2020; Le Roy & Seebacher, 2018), and community structure (Stefani et al., 2020).…”
