The energy used to move a given distance (cost of transport; CoT) varies significantly between individuals of the same species. A lower CoT allows animals to allocate more of their energy budget to growth and reproduction. A higher CoT may cause animals to adjust their movement across different environmental gradients to reduce energy allocated to movement. The aim of this project was to determine whether CoT is a repeatable trait within individuals, and to determine its physiological causes and ecological consequences. We found that CoT is a repeatable trait in zebrafish (Danio rerio). We rejected the hypothesis that mitochondrial efficiency (P/O ratios) predicted CoT. We also rejected the hypothesis that CoT is modulated by temperature acclimation, exercise training or their interaction, although CoT increased with increasing acute test temperature. There was a weak but significant negative correlation between CoT and dispersal, measured as the number of exploration decisions made by fish, and the distance travelled against the current in an artificial stream. However, CoT was not correlated with the voluntary speed of fish moving against the current. The implication of these results is that CoT reflects a fixed physiological phenotype of an individual, which is not plastic in response to persistent environmental changes. Consequently, individuals may have fundamentally different energy budgets as they move across environments, and may adjust movement patterns as a result of allocation trade-offs. It was surprising that mitochondrial efficiency did not explain differences in CoT, and our working hypothesis is that the energetics of muscle contraction and relaxation may determine CoT. The increase in CoT with increasing acute environmental temperature means that warming environments will increase the proportion of the energy budget allocated to locomotion unless individuals adjust their movement patterns.

The health of running freshwater systems depends to a large extent on flow rates, which can co‐vary with other environmental variables such as temperature. Water flow and temperature can influence oxidative status of individual animals, thereby impacting muscle function and locomotion. Consequently, ecologically important behaviours such as dispersal may be disrupted. Our aim was to determine whether the interactions between acclimation to flowing water (3 weeks at 0.06 m/s or still water), thermal acclimation (3 weeks at 18 and 28°C), and acute test temperatures (18–32°C) determine oxidative status, locomotor performance, and dispersal in mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We show that swimming capacity was greater in fish living in flowing water compared to those in still water, and that this difference was greater in warm acclimated fish. However, dispersal was not dependent on maximal locomotor capacities. Fish initiated dispersal to a greater extent when acclimated to flowing water and cool temperature, although there were interactions with acute test temperature. Dispersal speed was not affected by flow acclimation, but it was greater at cool test temperatures in cool acclimated fish, and vice versa for warm acclimated fish. Also, fish acclimated to flowing and cool water made a greater number of dispersal decisions. Oxidative damage to membranes and proteins did not change with flow or temperature treatments, but antioxidant capacities were greater in animals acclimated to flow and cool temperatures. Trait‐specific approaches used to assess fish responses to altered flow regimes typically consider a range of morphological and life‐history traits to characterise species and predict the impact of environmental change. Physiological traits and responses such as those we describe here can be a useful addition to life‐history traits in predicting the impact of environmental change on movement. Consideration of the impacts of physiological traits on dispersal can increase the efficacy of management and restoration projects.

Interacting effects of environmental enrichment across multiple generations on early life phenotypes in zebrafish

The environment plays an important role in an individual's development during early life, however, parents may also influence offspring development through so called "parental effects." We examined the effects of environmental enrichment in zebrafish (Danio rerio) across two generations through the paternal lineage. Fathers and grandfathers were exposed to either standard or high levels of housing enrichment for 4-weeks during adulthood. First-generation (F1) and secondgeneration (F2) offspring were obtained from controlled breeding and tested as larvae for changes in morphology at hatching stage (72hpf), and in locomotor activity at larval stage (120hpf) in both generations. We found paternal experience of enrichment resulted in changes in trunk length of F1 offspring and changes in spine curvature and dorsal length of F2 offspring, while changes in snout morphology of F2 offspring seemed to be driven by whether grandpaternal and paternal experience of the environment was matched or not. We found that while paternal enrichment increased the frequency of spontaneous movement in F1 and F2 offspring, interacting effects of paternal and grandpaternal enrichment on movement distance were seen in F2 offspring, and that spontaneous movement and the distance that larvae swam are thus distinct phenotypes that were differentially affected by the experiences of previous paternal generations. Taken together, these findings suggest that the parental and grandparental environment influence zebrafish behavior and morphology. The nature of these effects and the design of this study mean that these phenotypes were likely the result of nongenetic transmission through the paternal germline.
