To understand the complex stratigraphic response of a coastal depositional system to rapid eustatic rise and sediment inputs, the evolution of the Adriatic coastline and Po River system, during the post‐glacial (Holocene) transgression, was investigated. The landward migration and evolution of a wave‐dominated estuary was mapped, based on an extensive data set comprising 14 boreholes, 28 core descriptions and 308 piezocone tests, chronologically constrained between 11·5 and 7·0 kyr bp by 137 radiocarbon dates. Palaeogeographic maps reveal temporal differences in retrogradational geometries and mechanisms that likely underpin shoreline retreat. The Po estuary initially developed within a shallowly incised valley and then spread onto the interfluves. Between 11·5 and 9·2 kyr bp the Po fluvial system became avulsive/distributive and wetlands developed in topographically depressed areas. The shoreline retreated at a mean rate of ca 10 m year−1, between 9·2 kyr and 7·7 kyr bp, following a stepped trajectory at the centennial scale. After 7·7 kyr bp, bayhead deltas started to prograde and partially filled the estuary. The overall stratigraphic architecture is interpreted to reflect the sedimentary response of the coastal depositional system to the main pulses of early Holocene eustatic rise. The influence of antecedent topography, partly due to local subsidence, was dominant at the time of initial transgression. Basin morphology influenced sediment dispersal and partitioning. Sediment supplied by the Po River was trapped within the estuary, whereas coastal sand bodies at the estuary mouth were fed by alongshore currents and by reworking of older barriers. High‐resolution age control that ties facies evolution to independently constrained eustasy provides direct data to test models of short‐term coastal retreat under conditions of relative sea‐level rise, and makes this case study a useful analogue for the interpretation of ancient marginal‐marine, retrogradational systems where only stratal geometries are available.

Formation and evolution of back‐barrier perched lakes in rocky coasts: An example of a Holocene system in north‐west Spain

Coastal back‐barrier perched lakes are freshwater bodies that are elevated over sea‐level and are not directly subjected to the inflow of seawater. This study provides a detailed reconstruction of the Doniños back‐barrier perched lake that developed at the end of a small river valley in the rocky coast of the north‐west Iberian Peninsula during the Holocene transgression. Its sequence stratigraphy was reconstructed based on a core transect across the system, the analyses of its lithofacies and microfossil assemblages, and a high‐resolution radiocarbon‐based chronology. The Doniños perched lake was formed ca 4·5 ka bp. The setting of the perched lake was favoured by Late Holocene sea‐level stabilization and the formation of a barrier and back‐barrier basin, which was contemporaneous with the high systems tract period. This basin developed over marine and lagoonal sediments deposited between 10·2 ka bp and 8·0 ka bp, during rapidly rising sea‐level characteristic of the transgressive systems track period. At 1·1 ka bp, the barrier was breached and the perched lake was partially emptied, causing the erosion of the back‐barrier basin sediments and a significant sedimentary hiatus. Both enhanced storminess and human intervention were likely to be responsible for this event. After 1 ka bp, the barrier reclosed and the present‐day lake was reformed, with the water level reaching as high as 5 m above mean sea‐level. The depositional evolution of the Doniños system serves as a model of coastal back‐barrier perched lakes in coastal clastic systems that have developed over gently seaward‐dipping rugged substrates at small distances from the shoreline and under conditions of rising sea‐level and high sediment supply. A review of estuaries, back‐barrier lagoons, pocket beaches and back‐barrier perched lakes in the rocky coast of north‐west Spain shows that the elevation of the bedrock is the main factor controlling the origin and evolution of these systems.

AbstractIreland experienced a spatially complex pattern of relative sea-level (RSL) changes and shoreline development caused by the interplay of isostatic and eustatic (ice equivalent sea level) processes since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Using a combination of high-resolution marine geophysical data, vibrocores, foraminiferal analysis and 10 AMS radiocarbon dates, we reconstruct the Late Quaternary evolution and RSL history of Bantry Bay, a large (40 km long, 5-10 km wide) embayment in SW Ireland.The data indicate two infill phases: one before and one after the LGM, separated by glacial and lowstand sediments. The pre-LGM history is not dated and the depositional history is inferred. A large sediment lobe formed at the outer edge of Bantry Bay as a lowstand ice-proximal glacimarine outwash system as the ice retreated after the LGM, at a sea level ca. 80 m lower than present.Iceberg scour immediately west of this location likely relate to the break-up of the local Kerry-Cork Ice Cap. Long curvilinear ridges, seen both offshore and on top of the sediment lobe, probably formed as shoreface ridges under stronger-than-present tidal currents during a period of RSL stability (pre-14.6 ka cal BP). A subsequent infill phase is characterised by a basin-wide erosional (ravinement) surface and the deposition of inter-and sub-tidal estuarine sediments. Although our data support the general trends, our stratigraphic and radiocarbon data suggest a higher sea level between 11 and 13.5 ka cal BP than predicted by existing glacial isostatic adjustment models.
