Transient Cuttings Transport with Foam in Horizontal Wells-A Numerical Simulation Study for Applications in Depleted Reservoirs

Abstract: A good knowledge of foam hydraulics and cuttings transport (hole cleaning) is essential for successful applications of foam drilling technology in horizontal wells. Estimating local fluid velocity in a partially blocked eccentric annulus (due to cuttings) is a challenge; so, a new analytical method of calculating local stress and velocity (near cuttings-bed in annulus) in an eccentric annular flow is derived which makes it possible to estimate the bed height for foam drilling in horizontal wells. Therefore, a … Show more

“…From a modelling perspective, several 1D mechanistic and 2D layer models have been previously constructed. [161][162][163][164][165] These models have shown good potential for predicting experimental measurements with additional insights provided by sensitivity analyses. More recently, the application of 3D Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools for studying cuttings transport phenomena has gained prevalence due to its unparalleled ability to predict experimental measurements.…”

“…Numerous extensions and improvements of earlier developed 160,187,188 mechanistic models have been carried out more recently. 164,165,189 Figure 11: Schematic representation of a 2-layer (a, b, e) and 3-layer (c, d, f) cuttings transport model with corresponding experimental observations (e, f). The 3-layer assumes the existence of a bottom stationary cuttings layer, a moving middle layer and a top suspension layer; whereas the 2-layer model assumes a bottom stationary layer and a top suspension layer.…”
