Transient risk factors of acute occupational injuries: a case-crossover study in two Danish emergency departments

Abstract: In spite of numerous prevention efforts occupational injuries continue to be a global challenge. A case-crossover design was used to examine the effect of eight specific transient risk factors for acute occupational injuries. The study identified several transient risk factors that led to significantly increased risks for occupational injuries, particularly for equipment and work practice-related factors.

“…The wider research literature on occupational health and safety also support the findings of this review (Fabiano et al 2008;Underhill and Quinlan, 2010;Smith and DeJoy, 2012;Giraudo et al 2016;Osterlund et al 2017;Koranyi et al 2018). Among these studies, Fabiano et al (2008) and Giraudo et al (2016) directly compared injury risk between employment-secure and precarious workers and found that precarious workers experienced injury risk that was significantly higher (136% -175% and 24 -57% respectively) than their securely employed peers.…”

“…Although it can be said that injuries associated with precarious employment are not particular to migrants, the culture of regulatory failure by employers and lack of knowledge on health and safetly are arguably experienced differently by migrants due to communication difficulties and differences in power levels (Weishaar, 2008;Wright, 2011;Potter and Hamilton, 2014;Scott, 2017;Tang and Pilgrim, 2017). The issue of physical assult in the workplace identified in this review is also a result that is unique compared to other occupational health and safety studies (Fabiano et al 2008;Underhill and Quinlan, 2010;Smith and DeJoy, 2012;Giraudo et al 2016;Osterlund et al 2017;Koranyi et al 2018). This comes into play when considering the vulnerability of migrants as well as the wider social context of the host country.…”

“…Occupational or work-related injuries are frequently seen in the Emergency Department (ED) [1][2][3][4], however a limited information on such injuries are available in the emergency medicine literature. The International Labour Organization (ILO) defined occupational injury (OI) as "any personal injury, disease or death resulting from an occupational accident; an occupational injury is therefore distinct from an occupational disease, which is a disease contracted as a result of an exposure over a period of time to risk factors arising from work activity" [5], and such injuries can include minor, major or fatal, with severities determined by diverse factors [6].…”

“…The first study by Østerlund et al (1) uses the case-crossover design, and like its predecessors (9, 10) examines several potential modifiable transient risk factors to estimate the short-term risk of a work-related acute traumatic injury. This study sought to answer the questions (i) "when work tasks are repeatedly performed, why does an injury occur at one point in time and not at earlier or later times?"…”
