Transition from school into university mathematics: experiences across educational contexts

Abstract: The term 'transition' describes a process of change, which involves discontinuities and often crisis. The ICMI Topic Survey by Gueudet et al. (2016) offers a recent overview on transitions, describing transitions in mathematics education from three distinct perspectives: epistemological, cognitive and socio-cultural. The authors then state that any change in one of the three dimensions can be considered a transition in mathematics education. The volume, a very comprehensive survey of the state of the art in th… Show more

“…Furthermore, an examination of the transitions that students undergo as they progress from primary education to university-level mathematics reveals multifaceted dimensions encompassing epistemological, cognitive, and socio-cultural perspectives. This examination highlights the imperative of accommodating diverse educational contexts and experiences within the framework of cultural integration in learning models (Martino et al, 2023). It calls for an approach that acknowledges the varied trajectories and encounters of students as they advance in their mathematical education.…”

“…Moreover, the experiences of students transitioning from secondary school to university-level mathematics, as explored across diverse educational contexts (Martino et al, 2023), emphasize the holistic nature of such transitions. Beyond mere cognitive challenges, these experiences encompass socio-cultural and affective dimensions.…”

“…According to the National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics, the objectives of learning mathematics are increasing problemsolving, reasoning, communication, connection, and representation skills [2]. Much research on transitioning from school to university mathematics has addressed students' epistemological and cognitive difficulties [3].…”
