Transition-metal-free controlled polymerization for poly(p-aryleneethynylene)s

Abstract: A catalytic amount of fluoride anions promoted the polymerization of 1-pentafluorophenyl-4-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene, providing a high-molecular-weight polymer in a chain-growth-like manner.

“…The vibrational mode of C≡C at 2002 cm –1 was downshifted from 2157 cm –1 in bulk MPETMS (Figure S10), indicating the formation of covalent Au–C σ‐bonds. Note that the binding motif of terminal alkynes on Au surfaces has been documented ,. In addition, SERS spectroscopy was also performed using an excitation wavelength of 785 nm (Figure b).…”

“…Note that the binding motif of terminal alkynes on Au surfaces has been documented. [45,46] In addition, SERS spectroscopy was also performed using an excitation wavelength of 785 nm (Figure 4b). The peaks of n(C-CH 3 /d CH), n(C=C), and n(C C, Au bound) were found at 1166, 1595, and 1995 cm -1 , respectively, in the same fashion as with the excitation wavelength of 532 nm.…”

“…Only very recently, π-conjugated copolymers based on perfluoroaromatics and thiophene or alkynes moieties have been successfully synthesized in absence of any transition metals. [223,224] The polymerization relies on the fluoride-catalyzed activation of Si-C bonds on one hand and on nucleophilic aromatic substitutions on the other hand.…”
