Translating exercise interventions to an in-home setting for seniors: preliminary impact on physical activity and function

Abstract: A low cost, in-home intervention elicited improvements in both PA and PF. Future research is warranted to expand upon the size and scope of this study, exploring dose thresholds (and time frames) for PA to improve PF and strategies to further bolster adherence rates to maximize intervention benefits.

“…We also hypothesized that availability of exercise equipment would facilitate the development of planning, and the results supported our predictions. The importance of planning to perform a behavior regularly are well documented [ 55 , 56 , 57 ], however, little work has investigated necessary resources that facilitate effective planning strategies, specifically in the home environment [ 58 , 59 , 60 ]. The present study findings are pertinent since planning demonstrated a critical role in mediating the intention–behavior pathway, which aligns with previous research [ 36 ].…”

“…Older adults affected by frailty or having chronic diseases make the most use of community resources, hospitals and long-term care institutions [ 1 , 2 ]. Most existing health services are symptom-oriented, fragmented and only available at premises of the health care professional or as an inpatient or geriatric health service but there is growing evidence that providing therapy in the home environment is effective [ 2 5 ]. Information and communication technology (ICT) services have gained increasing attention due to the development of solutions for tele-monitoring [ 6 ] and tele-treatment [ 7 ].…”

“…Posteriormente, se realizó una revisión a texto completo de los 129 estudios restantes, excluyendo 56 estudios por no incluir a población objeto de estudio, 11 por no ser ECA y 56 por el tipo de intervención. Finalmente, 6 estudios cumplieron los criterios de inclusión [27][28][29][30][31][32] siendo analizados en esta revisión (fig. 1).…”
