Translating ‘New Compactism’, circulation of knowledge and local mutations: Copenhagen’s Sydhavn as a case study

Abstract: The international circulation of urban design concepts often leads to their characterization as transferable ideals defined by a set of universalized 'best practices' that are simply implemented in new localities, as is typical of top-down approaches to planning. Recently, the compact city and New Urbanism have become trendy concepts informing the development of urban projects across geographies. This research draws on ANT sensitivities and policy mobilities studies to examine the regeneration of Copenhagen's … Show more

“…Pathway cities are revolving around those positioned at the top of the global hierarchy of urbanity, illustrating the developmental pathway for other cities to follow. Third is cities as a policy description, which presents a model for a policy strategy that can urge an urban transformation.…”

“…The urban norm, heavily influenced by new urbanist ideals, draws on the aesthetic features of an (often European) "traditional city". These ideals aim to contribute to a sense of community and social change (McCann and Ward 2010;Sharifi 2016) with density and compactness used as key features of a good plan (Adelfio et al 2021;McFarlane 2015). This 'ideal type' of a traditional city reduces urban complexity to a function of physical attributes and systems, separating the city from nature or the non-urban environment (Wachsmuth 2014).…”

“…There is currently a drive towardscompact cities, proposed as a way to enhance social life and improve conditions for sustainable development (Adelfio et al 2021). Transit-oriented development (TOD) is one of the planning models brought forward for inspiring planners worldwide in developing the compact city (Bertolini 2017).…”
