Translation, adaptation and validation of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) for an Arab population: the Sfax modified WOMAC

Abstract: We translated and adapted the WOMAC index into Arabic to suit Tunisian people. The translated questionnaire is reliable but not valid in its original form. We propose the use of a modified version of PF subscale of the WOMAC, although the psychometric properties of this instrument must be examined in a larger population.

“…The Cronbach's alpha for the Persian WOMAC and Lequesene ranged from 0.88 to 0.94 and from 0.63 to 0.84, respectively, which are comparable with those previously reported for Korean [32] [29] (0.84-0.92) versions. In a study conducted in a Thai population [31], the range of ICC values for the Thai WOMAC was 0.52-0.79.…”

“…There are over 80 linguistically validated alternate language translations of the WOMAC index [12] and it has been translated into many languages in non-English-speaking countries, including Tunisia [29], Germany [30], Thailand [31], Korea [32] and Turkey [4,33], which indicates the usefulness and reliability of this instrument. Also, the Lequesne Algofunctional Index is a widespread international instrument for outcome measurement in hip and knee diseases.…”

“…Manual therapies with exercises are found beneficial for knee osteoarthritis both in decreasing pain and increasing functionality Problem with this approach is daily visits to therapist and cost of doing exercise under supervision and results in high cost, number of days lost at work and low compliance. There few studies done comparing supervised structured exercise program with home based exercise program [4,5]. In this study we have compared effectiveness of supervised structured …”

“…The WOMAC is sensitive to change and easy to use [18][19][20] ; therefore, it is the most commonly used disease-specific outcome measure for osteoarthritis of the hip and knee [18][19][20] . The WOMAC has undergone rigorous validation and has been used in more than sixty languages 15,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] , and it has been validated against the SF-36 29 . Considering its focus on older patients with osteoarthritis, it may not be appropriate for use in a young and active population as it is likely to have ceiling effects in this group.…”
