Transliminality and transpersonal self-expansiveness predict paranormal belief.

Abstract: Studies have shown that paranormal belief is correlated with numerous variables, including schizotypy and transliminality. The current study aimed to examine (a) the role of transliminality in understanding variability in paranormal belief and (b) whether transpersonal self-expansiveness improved the prediction of paranormal belief after accounting for the influence of transliminality. Self-expansiveness is a concept likely to be embraced by paranormal believers, and it suggests possible access to knowledge be… Show more

“…Consistent with this perspective, high transliminality is conceptualized as a “permeable” mental threshold ( Thalbourne, 1998 ) that allows greater levels of material from unconscious (endo-psychic) and external sources to enter awareness ( Thalbourne and Maltby, 2008 ). In the case of believers, this provides a steady stream of anomalous perceptions that can be labelled as supernatural ( Rock et al, 2021 ). Accordingly, theorists view transliminality as predictive of the general trait tendency to hold paranormal beliefs ( Dagnall et al, 2010a ; Rock et al, 2021 ).…”

“…This notion aligns with models that explain PB in terms of belief driven attributions, which propose that ambiguous phenomena and occurrences are defined and elucidated via established credence, personal worldviews, and context [ 45 , 46 ]. Congruent with this supposition transliminality is predictive of the general trait tendency to PB [ 47 , 48 ].…”
