Translocation of Crohn's disease Escherichia coli across M-cells: contrasting effects of soluble plant fibres and emulsifiers

Abstract: BackgroundCrohn's disease is common in developed nations where the typical diet is low in fibre and high in processed food. Primary lesions overlie Peyer's patches and colonic lymphoid follicles where bacterial invasion through M-cells occurs. We have assessed the effect of soluble non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) and food emulsifiers on translocation of Escherichia coli across M-cells.MethodsTo assess effects of soluble plant fibres and food emulsifiers on translocation of mucosa-associated E coli isolates fro… Show more

“…Several probiotic bacterial species prevent attachment of enteric pathogens to intestinal epithelial cells in vitro ( 67 ). An alternative strategy is to block binding to lectins with bacterial components ( 68 ). Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been shown to be eff ective in a small controlled pilot study of Crohn ' s disease patients ( 69 ), but did not show benefi t in the primary end point of response defi ned by CDAI (Crohn ' s disease activity index) decrease ≥ 70 points in a larger multinational study ( 70 ).…”
