Transmission Electron Microscopy of Nanomaterials

Abstract: Structural and analytical characterization, in the nanometer scale, has become very important for all types of materials in recent years. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) is a perfect instrument for this purpose, which is summarized in this chapter. Parameters such as particle size, grain size, lattice type, morphological information, crystallographic details, chemical composition, phase-type, and distribution can be obtained by transmission electron micrographs. Electron diffraction patterns of nanomate… Show more

“…The study and investigation of nanomaterials and nanostructure is needed to discover the properties of nanostructured materials, for achieving this purpose, the efficient characterization instruments were used. TEM has evolved to become an indispensable device in the field of nanotechnology due to its high capabilities in providing structural and chemical information of nanomaterials from length scales to atomic dimensions, which provides the opportunity to understand the properties of nanomaterials and manipulate their behavior [39,40]. A high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM, JEM-1230, Japan) operated at 120 kV was used in this study to investigate the studied nanomaterials and nanostructures.…”

“…It uses a beam of very-high-energy electrons transmitted by a projector through a slide to examine the sample. Thus, the structure on the slide affects the light that passes through it, generating the desired images [ 94 , 104 ].…”

“…Upon image acquisition, characteristics such as particle size, grain size, lattice type (related back to the material being investigated), morphological information, crystallographic details, chemical composition, phase-type, and distribution can be observed. [115][116][117] To further characterize a specimen, elemental composition can be assessed with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Conveniently, TEMs are fitted with EDS capabilities, utilizing the already existing electron beam in analysis of near-surface elements of the sample.…”
