Transmission line assessment

Abstract: a transmission line system consists of five sub-systems, based on their individual functions. They are insulation, current carrying, construction, lightning protection and accessories subsystems. Each of the subsystem consists of components. Hundreds of transmission towers are usually be found between two substations. . The condition of a transmission line is assessed based on these subsystems. Among others, only some component, namely critical components, contributes to the condition of a transmission line. A… Show more

“…The financial severity score (Sm) of eight components applies directly to the condition index of the component (%CI), as outlined in Table 5, because the maintenance budget should be set according to the condition of the component. However, the financial severity score (SEfinance) of the transmission line is calculated as expressed using Equation (6). In this equation, the percentage cost (%Cost) of the eight components includes spare parts and the maintenance cost from the total cost of the tower span.…”

“…Economic problems have forced electric utility providers to provide better quality electricity under lower operating and maintenance costs. Therefore, the effective and efficient use of transmission assets is of prime concern to gain maximum benefits, whereas maintenance costs should be reduced [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Currently, some high voltage (HV) transmission lines in Thailand are very old and deteriorated.…”

“…Each assessment method has a unique approach for collecting the results. Technical characteristic assessment is concerned with reporting the physical, mechanical, and qualities of a component that can be measured during scheduled patrolling activities using visual and assessment tools [9,10]. The main steps of condition assessment include recording any damage and determining the causes of distress, assessing the extent of distress, and estimating the residual strengths of structural components and the system [7 -9].…”
