Transmission‐line modelling of semiconductor lasers: The transmission‐line laser model

Abstract: The application of the transmission-line modelling technique to the design of semiconductor lasers and optical systems is reviewed. Generalized scattering matrices are developed to allow the technique to be applied to novel devices and systems.

“…3 shows the output spectrum of the MLL for optimized SA amplitude and active region current. The different laser sections are internally modeled in VPI TransmissionMaker using the well-known Transmission Line Laser Model (TLLM) that, in contrast to traditional rate equation model, accounts for the longitudinal distribution of the carrier density and optical power, which is especially important when simulating pulsed lasers [20]. In addition, VPI Transmission Maker models each TLLM section considering multiple physical effects, such as the dependency of the refractive index on the carrier density, the nonlinear gain, and the medium dispersion.…”

“…Simulations have been performed using VPI Transmission Maker® 8.3, which implements Transmission Line Laser Model (TLLM). TLLM divides the cavity into sections where the electric field is solved in the time domain using transmission line approach and it can efficiently simulate multiple modes large signal dynamical systems [18] and consider longitudinal variation of carrier and photon density. This model has been already used to simulate a broad variety of optical devices including quarter-wavelength DFB lasers under external light injection [19] showing realistic results.…”
