Transmission lines emulating moving media

Abstract: In this paper, we show how the electromagnetic phenomena in moving magnetodielectric media can be emulated using artificial composite structures at rest. In particular, we introduce nonreciprocal periodically loaded transmission lines, which support waves obeying the same rules as plane electromagnetic waves in moving media. Because the actual physical structure is at rest, in these transmission lines there are no fundamental limitations on the velocity values, which may take values larger than the speed of li… Show more

“…The link between moving media and bianisotropic effective parameters has been shown in the past [25,26]. Hence, since the space-time modulated medium can be represented by effective bianisotropic parameters, it can also be linked to an equivalent moving medium.…”

“…Here, we are interested in a material response of the form: zz . We refer to this type response (with  real-valued and possibly frequency dependent) as a moving-medium type coupling [32,49]. We note in passing that for moving media the constitutive parameters are required be evaluated at the Doppler shifted frequency [50,51].…”

“…The basic idea is an additional cross-coupling between series and shunt braches of the transmission line via transformer [17] (or, equivalently, the cross-coupling between orthogonal components of electric and magnetic field vectors of a plane wave). This principle was further extended in [83] using active coupling (via gyrator) enabling moving-media behavior. The same idea may be applied for both gain-based and non-Foster-based active metamaterials.…”
