Transmission performance of fibre-optic bundle for solar lighting

Abstract: SUMMARYTransmission of concentrated solar energy via fibre-optic bundle (FOB) has a great potential for numerous applications. In this paper, it is aimed to determine the transmission performance of a constructed plastical FOB-based solar lighting system. The experiments and measurements are carried out by means of a metal halide source simulating the spectral distribution of solar radiation in visible range of wavelength. Optical efficiency, luminous efficacy, attenuation, spectral characterization under diff… Show more

“…In last twenty years, optical fibers, currently used in telecommunication systems, have also been investigated for transmitting high powers in medicine 1,2 , lighting and heating systems 3,4 , special electrical power stations 5 , etc. One may expect that the transmission of energy by optical fibers provides us with an alternative to the traditional methods for transfer of heat or electricity 6 .…”

“…Daylight has an important effect on the alertness and mood of individuals (van Bommel and van den Beld 2004). People spending their days in nondaylight-permeating buildings may, therefore, be in biological darkness, contributing to reduced performance (Kandilli et al 2009). In summary, daylight offers health and psychological advantages, such as fewer absences at work (Andr e and Schade 2002) and greater productivity.…”

“…It is important to choose fibers with large NAs because they feature large differences in the refractive indices of the core and the outer shell of the fiber, called a cladding (Liang et al 1998). The primary advantage of lighting systems with solar concentrators is the potential to reduce energy consumption to a greater extent than conventional systems can (Kandilli et al 2009). Moreover, some studies have focused on the transmission of concentrated solar energy through single strands of OF or bundles of fibers, and it is noteworthy that an OF is a chemically resistant material that can be used in different environments.…”

“…However, optical fibers have also been investigated for high power delivery in medicine [2][3][4], special electrical power stations [5], lighting and heating systems [6,7], for material processing in industry [8], etc. The energy delivery using optical fibers can provide us an efficient alternative to traditional methods for transfer of heat and electricity [9] or sun light transmission in solar systems [6]. Several types of all-glass optical fibers with solid cores have been tested for high power delivery such as silica fibers, sapphire fibers [2,10], germanium dioxide fibers [11], etc.…”
