“…The transnational logics of whiteness, and in particular white femininity, has been a relatively underexamined phenomenon in critical race communication studies as well as the larger interdisciplinary field of critical whiteness studies. Other than a small body of work, there is little that has been written on the transnationalization of white femininity, and the logics through which the nation globalizes its imaginations through the figure of the white woman (Shome, 2006). In the field of feminist cultural studies, scholars such as Grewal (1996), Kaplan (1995Kaplan ( , 2001 and Blunt (1999) have been key in suggesting the importance of examining white femininity as a transnational phenomenon.…”

In keeping with recent efforts of scholars to chart the ''intersections'' of postcolonial scholarship and communication studies (Shome & Hegde, 2002), and transnational feminism and communication studies (Shome, 2006), this interdisciplinary engagement also seeks to build bridges between works of postcolonial scholars such as Edward Said, Chandra Mohanty, Gayatri Spivak and Partha Chatterjee, and mainstream mass media research. Finally, at the level of practice, this study resists the controlling and disciplining of female bodies as a part of imperialistic projects and nation building efforts.…”

“…A transnational feminist analytic approach (Hedge, 1998; Hesford, 2010; Shohat, 2006; Shome, 2006) and critical discourse analysis, a method frequently used in cross‐over studies (Báez, 2006; Cepeda, 2010; Molina Guzmán, 2010; Valdivia, 2000), structure the analysis and interpretation present in the article. These approaches contextualize the manner in which Juanes's work as a musician, activist, cultural ambassador, and Colombian star functions within contemporary global media.…”
