Transplantation of kidneys from paediatric DCD donors: a comparison with DBD donors

Abstract: Paediatric DCD kidneys represent a valuable source of donor kidneys that has not been fully utilized. Although transplantation of paediatric DCD kidneys is associated with a higher risk of graft failure than transplantation of paediatric DBD kidneys, results are comparable with adult donors. We therefore conclude that paediatric DCD kidneys can be safely added to the donor pool.

“…Transplant outcomes are based on limited data and show a higher prevalence of delayed kidney graft function but good short-and mediumterm graft function and patient survival. There is no significant difference in longer term kidney outcomes compared with NDD (39,40,83). Long-term liver outcomes also seem to be similar with those from NDD donors, although data are lacking.…”

“…A study from the Netherlands in 2013 showed that renal allograft survival in kidney transplantation was slightly worse for pediatric DCD donors compared to pediatric DBD donors, but that these results were comparable to adult DCD donors [19]. This suggests that pediatric DCD donors could be considered in a similar way to adult DCD donors, in order to expand the potential donor pool.…”
