Transplanting macrophytes as a rehabilitation technique for lowland streams and their influence on macroinvertebrate assemblages

Abstract: Lowland streams are usually affected by river engineering works that produce the loss of habitat heterogeneity. Our aim was to assess the transplantation of macrophytes with different complexity into a lowland stream which was dredged and widened. Stuckenia pectinata and Hydrocleys nymphoides were collected at an extraction site and installed at a transplant site. The growth and coverage of macrophytes beds were quantifi ed. Taxonomic richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, abundance, composition and proportion of… Show more

“…large aquatic vascular plants) are often used as indicator species in stream restoration (Lorenz et al 2012; Kail et al 2015; O'Hare et al 2018) due to their importance in the structure and function of stream ecosystems (Madsen et al 2001; O'Hare et al 2018; Alahuhta et al 2021). Therefore, incorporating charismatic macrophyte indicator species into restoration projects may improve cultural ecosystem service (Thomaz 2021), public support (Senzaki et al 2017), and ecological outcomes (O'Hare et al 2018; Altieri et al 2021; Marsh et al 2021).…”

“…They are also very susceptible to the direct and indirect impacts of anthropogenic pressure. In such cases, the difficulty lies not only in the selection of the optimal replacement habitat for the species, but also in its subsequent monitoring and in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the activities carried out [ 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
