Transport and NMR study of the scandium boron carbide compoundSc2B1.1C

Abstract: Transport properties and nuclear magnetic resonance ͑NMR͒ of the new scandium boron carbide compound Sc 2 B 1.1 C 3.2 were investigated. Sc 2 B 1.1 C 3.2 has a trigonal crystal structure ͓aϭbϭ23.710(9)A, c ϭ6.703(2)A, P3m1] and is composed of alternate ͓B 1/3 C 2/3 ͔-Sc-C-Sc-͓B 1/3 C 2/3 ͔ layers, with the boron and carbon mixed layer ͓B 1/3 C 2/3 ͔ forming a very rare graphitelike structure. Physical properties similar to graphite intercalation compounds ͑GIC͒ were observed. The temperature dependence of the … Show more

“…The structure is composed of alternate -[B 1/3 C 2/3 ] ∞ -Sc-C-Sc-[B 1/3 C 2/3 ] ∞ -layers (Fig. The physical properties were investigated and the following made clear [7]. A particularly interesting structural feature is that the boron and carbon atoms -[B 1/3 C 2/3 ] ∞ -appear to form a puckered graphite-like layer within the compound.…”

“…The carbon systems are well known such as the cluster C 60 fullerene compounds and the 2D graphite intercalation compounds (GIC's). We have previously discovered the first [B/C] graphite intercalation-like compound, Sc 2 B 1.1 C 3.2 which has a [B 1 C 2 ] ∞ graphitic layer [7]. However, the main focus up to now for the boron network compounds has been on the interesting structural properties or mechanical properties.…”

“…As a new angle, we have focused on MgB 2 C 2 which is a [B/C] layered compound [12]. We have been interested in the [B/C] layered compounds, ever since we discovered the first [B/C] graphite intercalation compound (GIC) Sc 2 B 1:1 C 3:2 which has a [B 1 C 2 ] 1 graphitic layer [13]. Work has also been done in 5f [B/C] compounds which exhibit magnetism not always in accordance with the criteria of the Hill limit [14].…”
