Transrectal or transvaginal ultrasoundguided biopsy for pelvic masses: external validation and usefulness in oncologic patients

Abstract: This study externally validated the feasibility and safety of TRUS- or TVUS-guided biopsy. In addition, these techniques appear to enable accurate pathologic diagnoses of pelvic masses in oncologic patients to be made safely and relatively noninvasively.

“…There is no clear evidence supporting superiority of multiday regimens over single-dose treatments (38,39). Other situations in which the use of antibiotic agents may be considered include biopsies performed via a transvaginal or transoral approach, biopsies involving needle transgression of bowel loops, biopsies of potentially infected target lesions, and biopsies in immunocompromised patients (40)(41)(42); however, there is no documented evidence showing that the use of antibiotic agents in these situations reduces the risk of infection.…”

“…The data in the literature are mostly retrospective. Some studies included patients with non-specified abdominal-pelvic tumors who were often previously considered unsuitable for surgery 10 19–24. Therefore, correlation between ultrasound-guided tru-cut biopsy and final surgical histology is rarely reported 10 24.…”

“…In the field of gynecologic oncology, some studies have investigated the role of ultrasound-guided biopsy in the management of abdominal and pelvic tumors, demonstrating that the procedure is safe and feasible 10 19–25. However, most were retrospective studies and included patients with different tumor sites (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer).…”

“…Ultrasound-guided and CT-guided core biopsies are both well-established, minimally invasive methods capable of providing good quality specimens for histological diagnosis. However, the transvaginal route may provide an easier exposure to lesions situated deeply in the pelvic cul-de-sac or the gynaecological organs [ 5 , 10 , 12 , 14 , 18 , 19 ]. CT-guided procedures are more expensive and their availability is limited in our country; therefore, ultrasound-guided biopsies may accelerate the diagnostic process compared to CT-guided biopsies.…”

“…Ultrasound-guided biopsy is a routine diagnostic method to obtain tissue samples and used widely in different types of tumours [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Pelvic solid masses can be biopsied via transabdominal, transvaginal, transrectal or transperineal routes [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Generally, lesions located deep within the female pelvis are not easy to access transdabdominally due to various bowel loops, major vessels, uterus, urinary bladder and ureter being in the path of the needle [ 1 , 11 , 12 ].…”
