This paper considers the possibility of devising a technology of fast railroad communication for the transportation of containers between the port and customer enterprises in the course of intermodal transportation. The purpose of technology development is to reduce the share of the use of trucks on intermodal routes and thus solve a number of related environmental, transport, municipal, and economic problems. The devised technology is based on the principles of bringing the railroad as close as possible to the end points of the route, minimizing the number of intermediate modes of transport, and enabling the maximum speed of movement of containers by rail. For this purpose, the use of MetroCargo™ freight terminals and CargoSprinter modular trains is proposed. In the course of the study, the task to reliably plan the operation of the fleet of such trains for the delivery of containers between the port and enterprises under the conditions of "noisy" initial data was set and solved. To this end, the problem was formalized in the form of a model of mixed programming, based on the principles of robust optimization. To optimize the model taking into consideration the principles of robustness, a procedure was proposed that uses a two-circuit genetic algorithm. As a result of the simulation, it was found that the resulting plan was only 6.5 % inferior to the objective criterion of the plan, which was compiled without taking into consideration robustness. It was proved that the devised model makes it possible to build an operational plan for the delivery of containers by rail, which is close to optimal. At the same time, the plan is implemented even in the case of the most unfavorable set of circumstances in the form of delays, shifts in the time windows of the cargo fronts, etc., that is, under the actual conditions of the transport process

Transshipment is the process of off-loading an intermodal loading unit (for example, different types of containers, semitrailers, swap-bodies, and so on) from one means of transport (for example, a vessel, a freight railcar, etc.) and loading it onto another. Such a process, as well as other logistics services related to loading units, may take place at a transshipment terminal, which is the intermediate node added to an intermodal transport network when combining two or more liner services that facilitate freight transport. Growing customer requirements affect transshipment terminal operations and contribute to the development of comprehensive logistics services. Terminal clients expect the delivery of complex services that often pose serious challenges to terminals providing these services. The specific decision-making tools are essential for facilitating the shaping of terminals’ complex service offerings. In this study, we investigated the issues connected to the complexity of logistics services offered by transshipment terminals. The aim was to develop a decision-making approach to assess the complexity of logistics services offered by these terminals. A procedure for the formulation of complex and comprehensive service sets at transshipment terminals, which includes sustainable energy and energy efficiency issues, was proposed. The approach for assessing the complexity of services at terminals handling intermodal loading units was developed, and an appropriate mathematical model was applied. Consequently, indexes of the efficiency and comprehensiveness levels of ordered services in a terminal were proposed. The ranking of decision-making criteria influencing the shaping of complex service offerings was created based on the results of a questionnaire survey distributed among the managerial representatives of terminals located in Poland. The data obtained with the use of a questionnaire survey allowed us to verify the proposed approach. The research results may be useful for the management of transshipment terminals while making decisions on the creation of comprehensive services offered to their clientele.

A dynamic development of intermodal transport is observed worldwide. This development, among other issues, is related to increasing the level of transport efficiency and sustainability. That increase presents a challenge for the participants of intermodal transport systems. Therefore, there is a need to analyze the factors influencing the efficiency and sustainability of intermodal transport. The article aims to analyze these factors considering the viewpoint of transport chains participants. Ten factors influencing intermodal transport efficiency and sustainability were identified. The case study of Polish market was analyzed using marketing research tool. The questionary was developed, and the survey was carried out among the representatives of intermodal terminals located at seaports, rail-road terminals and forwarders. On the basis of collected information, it was possible to set the ranking of the particular factors. It was stated that efficient handling of cargo and transport means in transshipment terminals forms the most important factor from the practitioners’ viewpoint.
