Transverse sensitivity suppression using multi-axis surface encoder with parasitic error compensation

Abstract: Transverse sensitivity that is mainly resulted from parasitic error motions can introduce undesired motion components and remarkably lower the manipulation qualities of most inertial sensors. This problem becomes even more apparent for multi-axial sensors as additional demands for multi-degree-of-freedom detection become higher. In this letter, a method to minify the transverse sensitivity of an inertial sensor by multi-degree-of-freedom optical sensing and measurement has been reported and tested. A multi-axi… Show more

“…The timely and accurate analysis of deterioration factors inside civil constructions can provide prompt solutions and prevent accidental destruction [5][6][7][8]. Several computation methods and experimental schemes of vibration sensing devices have been proposed, including laser Doppler vibrometers [9][10][11] and fiber optics-based sensors [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Laser vibrometers 1289 (2023) 012036 IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1757-899X/1289/1/012036 2 are unstable as their operation is susceptible to the vibration of their locations, leading to significant measurement uncertainty, and they are vulnerable to environmental factors.…”

“…The striking feature of these techniques is the fact that they employ laser-based devices. Particularly, they can be laser Doppler vibrometers [6][7][8] or fiber opticsbased sensors [9][10][11]. Nevertheless, in this case, the device is demonstrated not to be very susceptible to the vibration of the construction where they are located.…”

“…The electrical method can demonstrate a high accuracy but is limited in its applications [ 6 , 7 ] because of its short measurement range, the requirement of conductive measurement target, and complexity of expansion to multi-DOF. The optical scheme can provide both a nanometric accuracy and a large range, mainly represented by the laser interferometer [ 8 , 9 ] and the grating encoder [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. However, the laser interferometer is vulnerable to environmental variation because of its long exposed optical path, which greatly influences the measurement standard, that is, light wavelength.…”
