Traumatic Hip Dislocation Associated with Proximal Femoral Physeal Fractures in Children: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Traumatic hip dislocation might lead to serious complications and a poor outcome. Fortunately, it is a rare condition in pediatric patients. The purpose of this study is to establish and describe the complications caused by hip dislocations associated with transphyseal femoral neck fractures. Therefore, we conducted a literature review that resulted in 11 articles, including 32 patients, older than 10 years of age, suffering from traumatic hip dislocation associated with a transphyseal femoral neck fracture. W… Show more

“…Traumatic hip dislocations in the pediatric population is a rare phenomenon, which increases difficulty of proper management 1–3,5 . There has been recent interest in the literature for a systematic review concerning pediatric traumatic hip dislocations, but the number of included articles and patients was small, thus limiting results 13 . A total of 24 articles were included in this systematic review with a total of 575 pediatric patients who had a traumatic hip dislocation.…”

“…[1][2][3]5 There has been recent interest in the literature for a systematic review concerning pediatric traumatic hip dislocations, but the number of included articles and patients was small, thus limiting results. 13 A total of 24 articles were included in this systematic review with a total of 575 pediatric patients who had a traumatic hip dislocation. Posterior hip dislocations were the most common (n = 370 dislocations), representing 86.4% of the total reported dislocations with specified dislocation direction.…”

“…Studies that consider the timing of surgical fixation suggest that early reduction [40] is necessary to avoid ischaemic injury [19,41,42]. The risk of AVN, however, may be determined by the patients age [43] and fracture pattern [44], irrespective of how and when the proximal femur is stabilized [19,42].…”
