Treatment and blood pressure control in Spain during 2002–2010

Abstract: BP control rates have improved in Spain from 2002 to 2010. This may be related, at least in part, with the higher use of antihypertensive treatment, particularly combined therapy.

“…There is also evidence in some countries of a significant increase in the proportion of hypertensives taking multiple antihypertensive agents, 9,21,31,32 in consonance with guidelines indicating that ≥2 antihypertensive agents are usually needed to achieve BP goals. [4][5][6][7] However, no previous quantification of the impact of medication on time changes in BP control has been made.…”

“…Also, the increase in BP control in Spain in the past decade was consistent with that reported in a series of primary-care surveys across the country. 31 In addition, medication packages were checked at subjects' home, which contributes to the accuracy of data in drug treatment. Unfortunately, medication dose and adherence were not assessed.…”

“…Listerri et al 19 , en el último PRESCAP, situaron el porcentaje de control en el 46%. Una posible explicación es que hubiera existido un sesgo de selección y que pacientes que ya se sabían no controlados hubieran rehusado participar.…”

“…Likewise, the proportion of patients on combined therapy increased from 44.0% to 63.6%. 3 Similarly, in other countries in Europe, both BP control rates and antihypertensive treatment have increased in the last years. 4 All these data emphasize that regardless of healthcare systems, BP control rates are improving in developed countries and that this improvement is related mainly to the higher use of antihypertensive therapy, particularly combined therapy.…”

“…These and probably other limitations promote relevant biases that do not let us compare these studies directly. [1][2][3][4] It would be very interesting to perform an international consensus to standardize how these surveys should be performed. This would allow the determination of real differences in BP control between countries and secondarily which health strategies are more effective.…”
