Treatment Compliance in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients on Dialysis

Abstract: This paper reviews the current knowledge concerning treatment compliance in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Adult hemodialysis patient noncompliance with the treatment regimen is very common. Objective and subjective measures of compliance, however, are often weakly correlated. In addition, the patients may be compliant with some aspects of the treatment regimen, but noncompliant with others. Unfortunately, no current model of predicting the degree of hemodialysis patient compliance is very accur… Show more

“…Compliance to a specific therapeutic regimen is critical for obtaining optimal effects, but its importance has always been underestimated [3, 28-29]. The significance of dialysis therapy needs to be highlighted since the patients undergoing this intervention have to not only adhere to the treatment regimen requirements, but also change their lifestyle, optimize their diet, and so on.…”

“…In the current study, a substantial diminution in programme compliance (adherence to the recommendations of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team) was observed. This issue of adherence is relevant to many aspects of healthcare [33], with wide ranges of adherence (15-94%) having been reported for a variety of programmes and diagnostic categories [34,35]. Among those with respiratory conditions, BOSLEY et al [36] noted that w50% of asthmatics did not take their medications regularly and that low adherence correlated with reduced health-related quality of life.…”

“…With respect to the compliance with the scheduled dialysis treatment, most of the patients showed a very regular and punctual attendance. We do not know whether this represents the general case [23,24], Uremic patients may develop aggregation of atherosclerosis both before and after starting dialysis with multiple established risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, glucose intolerance, and cigarette smoking [25], Whether chronic dialysis per se is an additional risk factor for acceleration of atherosclerosis is not yet known [26][27][28][29][30][31].…”
