Treatment continuation of four long-acting antipsychotic medications in the Netherlands and Belgium: A retrospective database study

Abstract: Achieving greater continuation of treatment is a key element to improve treatment outcomes in schizophrenia patients. However, reported treatment continuation can differ markedly depending on the study design. In a retrospective setting, treatment continuation remains overall poor among patients using antipsychotics. This study aimed to document the difference in treatment continuation between four long-acting injectable antipsychotics based on the QuintilesIMS LRx databases, national, longitudinal, panel base… Show more

“…The handprint considers the effect of antipsychotic treatment which keeps patients more stable, reducing the probability of an acute psychotic episode or relapse. This leads to a reduction in Human Health disability of the treated patients and is based on a Markov model that simulates treatment over one year [32,58,[62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70]. A new Markov model was developed to simulate disease outcomes of patients for PP1M and PP3M treatment, as well as Treatment Interruption.…”

“…9 , 10 Mode of administration includes daily oral medication and long-acting injectable (LAI) medications, which may be prescribed once every 2 weeks, 1 month, or 3 months. 11 , 12 Current treatments have a high rate of discontinuation. 13 Reasons identified for treatment discontinuation include side effects, lack of cooperation from the patient, sudden subjective symptom improvement, forgetfulness, lack of awareness about the illness, and lack of support.…”

“…Despite the backdrop, few studies attempted to describe how this novel paradigm affected prescribing practices. Available epidemiological data are limited to schizophrenia patients [ 39 43 ] and highly selected populations [ 40 , 44 , 45 ]. In order to fill the gap in the research literature, the cross-sectional phase of the STAR Network “Depot” Study aimed at evaluating how the claimed cultural change in LAIs prescription may have affected real-world practices, by (a) describing the main socio-demographic and clinical features (including symptom profiles, adherence and attitude towards treatments) of a large, representative, unselected population of patients starting a LAI medication, and (b) exploring possible predictors of the class of LAI prescribed.…”
