Treatment experiences of children and adolescents with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract: Few patients use psychostimulant medication in isolation, with the majority of parents using multiple approaches to manage their child's behaviour. Parents tried a variety of therapies before commencing psychostimulant medication, often because of fears regarding psychostimulant safety. Parents were generally happy with the results gained; however adolescents interviewed were less convinced of the benefits of psychostimulants.

“…The enlargement of concentration and assertiveness is thought to be one of the main results of long-term karate 16 . This effect is confirmed too by clinical studies demonstrating positive effects of karate training to improve sustained attention and reduce impulsivity in children with ADHD 20 . The coordination of complex body movements and the adaptation to continually changing exercises sustain top-down cognitive control and decrease automatic behaviours [18][19][20] .…”

Complementary, our children attending karate scored better on executive functioning than sedentary children.…”

“…Interestingly, a series of interviews about treatment experiences showed that over half (52%) of parents expressed initial reluctance towards psychostimulants. Once psychostimulants were used by children and adolescents with ADHD, 73% concurrently used other treatments [ 45 ]. These findings indicate that parents are concerned about their children using psychostimulants and are looking for accompanying treatment options.…”

“…Many of the children of the mothers in this sample were receiving at least one form of treatment for their ADHD symptoms (for many of which it was medication). Multi-modal approaches to treating ADHD are widely agreed to be the best approach to ameliorating symptoms (Leggett & Hotham, 2011). Edwards, 2002).…”
