“…The evidence reviewed by Pallister and Waller () suggests that women with ED do have higher rates of anxiety disorders compared with normal controls. In terms of psychological distress (as measured by the HADs), 42.96% of our sample had symptomatology of anxiety and 17.96% had symptomatology of depression, whereas rates of 10.4% and 8% were observed in the general community for anxiety and depression, respectively (Alonso et al, ; Brody, Pratt, & Hughes, ). Our results are consistent with findings of a recent paper that applied network analysis in more than 2,000 patients with ED, measuring symptoms with SCL‐90.…”

“…From a sociological point of view, traditional gender roles may play a part as caregiving is associated with increased stress in women, and the difference in stress levels between men and women has decreased as more women have entered the workforce (Mayor, ). However, women continue to have a greater risk of depression compared to men in more liberal, economically developed countries, meaning traditional gender roles may be only a small piece of the puzzle (Alonso et al, ; Rai, Zitko, Jones, Lynch, & Araya, ).…”

“…Across four developed countries including the United States, rates of mood and anxiety disorders and symptoms have increased between 1990 and 2015 despite increased treatment and medication (Jorm et al, ). Across 21 countries surveyed by the World Health Organization, roughly one tenth of responders had an anxiety disorder, yet approximately only one fourth of those afflicted received treatment, and most of the treatments were deemed inadequate (Alonso et al, ). The rising trend of mental afflictions across the world indicates a dire need for novel treatment ideas that may include microbiome‐mediated means.…”

“…Assim como no Brasil, em outros países também foram observadas reduzidas taxas de usos de serviços para tratamento da ansiedade e sem adequação clínica 21 . Todavia, em países de alta renda, que apresentam serviços de saúde mais estruturados em comparação ao sistema brasileiro, as taxas de uso de serviços nos EUA 22 foram quase duas vezes maior que o nosso meio.…”
