Treatment of Canine Hemangiosarcoma: 2000 and Beyond

Abstract: Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an aggressive and malignant neoplasia with a grave prognosis. Surgery and chemotherapy have limited success in prolonging survival times and increasing quality of life in dogs with HSA. Advances in medical oncology are resulting in increased survival rates and a better quality of life for veterinary cancer patients. An understanding of mechanisms of metastasis has led to the development of new treatments designed to delay or inhibit tumor spread. Promising new treatment options … Show more

“…Despite surgery and intensive chemotherapy, the median survival time for dogs diagnosed with HSA is little more than 6 months. [5][6][7][8] This naturally occurring disease of dogs resembles human angiosarcoma. Angiosarcomas are uncommon soft tissue sarcomas that can arise in a variety of locations, including liver, spleen, skin, breast, and endocrine organs.…”

“…It is a malignant, aggressive tumour that arises from the mutated vascular endothelial cells (Murakami et al, 2001). Hemangiosarcoma represents up to 7% of all tumours and 12% to 21% of all mesenchymal neoplasms in dogs (Clifford et al, 2000;Smith, 2003;Schultheiss, 2004;Thamm, 2007). Two forms of the hemangiosarcomas i.e., visceral and dermal forms exists.…”

“…3,5,[8][9][10] Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an aggressive malignancy primarily affecting older male, large-breed dogs. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] HSA typically affects the spleen, right atrium, and skin or sub- cutis. [12][13][14][15][16][17] At the time of diagnosis, distant metastatic disease is often present, and to date, multimodality therapy has had a limited effect in the treatment of visceral disease.…”
