Treatment of Chronic Migraine: A 3‐Month Comparator Study of Naproxen Sodium vsSumaRT/Nap

Abstract: A combination of SumaRT/Nap (group A) did not appear to reduce migraine headache frequency over a 3-month period. Subjects using naproxen sodium (group B) alone and completing the study per protocol had a marked statistically significant reduction in migraine headache days. Both groups completing the study per protocol had experienced clinically meaningful 2-hour headache relief. This suggests there may be a subset of patients with chronic migraine that are responsive to high doses of naproxen as an acute inte… Show more

“…The result of this study showed that the addition of propranolol long-acting (240 mg daily) to topiramate 50–100 mg per day does not add benefit when CM is inadequately controlled with topiramate alone. In another small pilot trial of 28 subjects, the combination of sumatriptan 85 mg plus naproxen 500 mg in a combination tablet did not reduce headache frequency over a 3-month period 60. Nevertheless, further clinical trials are needed to search for better combination therapies for CM patients.…”

“…77 Subjects received daily study medication for 1 month, and then used the same study drug as acute treatment for the subsequent 2 months. At the end of the first month, there was a 60% reduction in headache days for naproxen compared with a 24% reduction for sumatriptan/naproxen.…”

“…High‐quality data on this topic are even scanter in children and adolescents. Some adult data suggest frequent NSAID use is associated with lower headache frequency over time . We need better data to determine whether clinicians should continue to restrict acute medication use or allow patients to treat at the frequency their migraine symptoms dictate.…”
