Treatment of class II malocclusion and impacted canines with two-phase orthodontic treatment

Abstract: Twin Block appliance has been widely used for the treatment of Class II malocclusions in growing subjects, due to its versatility and its highly compliance nature. There are certain clinical indications where functional appliances can be used successfully in Class II malocclusion as in a growing patient. In using these appliances, the main concern is compliance of patients. This appliance simplifies the progression of treatment with fixed orthodontic braces later on. In this case, a 14-year-old adolescent was … Show more

“…8,9 Characteristics of Class II malocclusion include the protrusion of the upper jaw and upper lip, incompetent lip growth, poor chin morphology, and small nasolabial angles, which are often the main complaint of patients. [10][11][12] Measurements in this study were divided into three parts: occlusal plane (OCC-SN, OCC-FH, and OCC-MP), facial balance and soft tissue profile (FMA, FMIA, IMPA, and Z-angle), and vertical plane of the face (Y-axis and facial axis) as support. First, this study will discuss the relationship between SNA, SNB, and ANB with the occlusal plane (functional occlusal plane [FOP]).…”

“…The characteristics of class II malocclusion patients are usually a protrusion of basifacial 1/3 part and upper lip, incompetent growth of lip, poor morphology of chin and small nasolabial angle, which are often chief complaints of patients (Halimi et al, 2011;Gandhi et al, 2017). In recent years, more and more scholars pay attention to the importance of occlusal plane, which is a main reference indication in diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion.…”

“…The Twin Block appliance along with good patient compliance gives fast and excellent results and this is why it has become a popular choice for treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion in growing patients. 2 The teeth most frequently impacted in descending order are the mandibular and maxillary third molars, the maxillary canines, the mandibular and maxillary second premolars and the maxillary central incisors. 3,4 Canine impaction is ten to twenty times more common in the maxilla than in the mandible.…”
