Treatment of condyloma acuminata in pregnant women with cryotherapy combined with proanthocyanidins: Outcome and safety

Abstract: Abstract.Patients with condyloma acuminata (CA) during pregnancy represent a special risk group. The outcomes of many treatment methods for such cases are not satisfactory. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the treatment outcome and safety of cryotherapy combined with proanthocyanidins (PCs) for CA in pregnant women. In this study, 46 pregnant women with CA were treated with cryotherapy combined with PCs. The lesions were sprayed with liquid nitrogen until the color of the wart changed from fles… Show more

“…Furthermore, proanthocyanidins were shown to be excellent inhibitors of VEGF and had in vitro and in vivo anti-angiogenic properties that affected angiogenesis by inhibiting of VEGF expression, endothelial cell migration, and vascularization [64,69,70]. In addition, numerous clinical trials of proanthocyanidins have been performed for the treatment of various diseases in patients, and in healthy subjects and pregnant women [10,71,72]. These studies consistently show that proanthocyanidins are effective and safe, warranting their application to a variety of diseases.…”

“…As natural active substances without side effects, proanthocyanidins are excellent candidates for the treatment of psoriasis, and their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-proliferative, and immunomodulatory activities will likely ameliorate OS, Th17/Treg cell imbalances, keratinocyte over-proliferation, and angiogenesis. Finally, proanthocyanidins are safe for infants, pregnant women, and the elderly [72,74].…”

“…Fujii et al further reported that the PCs constituent Oligonol, found in lychee extract, is safe, nontoxic, and nonmutagenic to healthy humans even at 200 mg/day for three months [ 45 ]. Meanwhile, some clinical trials of PCs have been performed for the assessment of safety and the treatment of clinic diseases in healthy subjects and pregnant women, which have demonstrated that daily oral intake of PCs up to 2500 mg is safe in healthy adults and PCs serve as a safe and effective therapy for pregnant women with condyloma acuminata [ 46 , 47 ]. These results indicate that PCs are safe antioxidants with no apparent side effects and so may be widely utilized in clinical medicine and cosmetology.…”

“…Signiicant side efects have been observed for some of these methods, including local ulceration and scar formation, which may reduce a patient's compliance with treatment requirements. Medicine could potentially cause fetal malformation, and laser treatment and surgical excision may cause uterine contraction, or even abortion [32,55]. The safety of imiquimod has not been established, but a small number of patients worldwide have been treated with imiquimod and found to be efective and promising.…”

“…The warts are characterized by fast-growing and a reduced tolerance and poor compliance to treatment. Only a few treatments have been tested and recommended in pregnancy [55]. Podoilox (podophyllotoxin), podophyllin and sinecatechins should not be used during pregnancy.…”
