Treatment of distillery spentwash by hybrid UASB reactor

Abstract: A laboratory-scale hybrid UASB reactor, which combined an UASB in the lower part and a ®lter in the upper part, was used for the treatment of distillery spentwash. The reactor was operated under ambient conditions for 380 days. Using anaerobically digested sewage sludge as a seed, the start-up of the reactor and the cultivation of active granular sludge was completed within three months period. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation of the granules showed the presence of Mehtanonthrix-like bacteria as… Show more

“…This kind of reactor is called Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (HUASB) and is considered more stable for the treatment of a series of soluble or partially soluble wastewaters (Tilche and Vieira, 1991). Over the years, HUASBs have been used to treat a variety of industrial effluents (Coates and Colleran, 1990;Rajesh, et al, 2006 a,b;Shivayogimath and Ramanujam, 1999). In the present study, HUASB has been used to treat domestic wastewater.…”

“…Several studies on AF treatment process at pschrophilic temperature has obtained COD removal efficiencies of (80-90%) temperatures [8], whereas at mesophilic and extreme treatment temperature of 40 o C, a 80% COD removal was obtained [9]. The results revealed that UAF reactor efficiency increased with increase temperature as well as increase in HRT.…”

“…The potential of UASB and UAHR processes in treating various industrial wastewaters has been demonstrated in both full-scale and pilot-scale levels as well as in numerous bench-scale experiments (Lettinga, 1995;Shivayogimath and Ramanujam, 1999;Wolmarans and De Villiers, 2002;Gupta et al, 2007). Although there has been a great deal of research concerning the performance of high-rate reactors, there are few reports of comparative experiments between various high-rate processes treating distillery spentwash operated under similar conditions.…”
