Treatment of Dogs with Oral Melanoma by Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy and Platinum‐Based Chemotherapy (1987–1997)

Abstract: This retrospective study in 39 dogs with incompletely resected oral melanoma examined the efficacy of hypofractionated radiation therapy and platinum-containing chemotherapy. All dogs were completely staged, with the majority of dogs classified as stage 1. Dogs received 6 weekly fractions of 6-gray (Gy) megavoltage irradiation with a cobalt-60 unit or a 4-MeV (megaelectron volts) linear accelerator. Dogs received cisplatin (10-30 mg/m2 IV) or carboplatin (90 mg/m2 IV) chemotherapy 60 minutes before radiation d… Show more

“…Macroscopic operative wound healing occurred in 7-9 days, allowing removal of suture materials- fig 7. At recheck, performed at 1, 2, 3, 6 and respectively 12 months from the laser reintervention, there were no evidences of tumour recurrence nor metastasis. Comparison of the obtained data with those reported in other studies (Bergman, 2007;Freeman et …”

“…Treatment of oral melanomas utilizes the surgical excision-resection (Bradley et al, 1984;Culp et al, 2013;Felizzola et al, 2002;Kosovsky et al, 1991;Wallace et al, 1992) and/or radiation therapy ( Proulx et al, 2003;Freeman et al, 2003), chemotherapy with carboplatin (Brockley et al, 2013;Freeman et al, 2003), immunotherapyvaccines with dendritic cells (Grosenbaugh et al, 2011;Ottnod et al, 2013).…”

“…28 When combined with platinum-based chemotherapy, hypofractionated radiation therapy yielded a better outcome with a median survival time of 363 days (n ¼ 39). 29 Sixth, the combined treatment did not produce significant damaging collateral effects. Seventh, to be accepted for clinical practice, any new cancer therapy should not only increase the survival lapse but also improve the quality of life.…”

“…Survival times quoted for conventionally treated stage II or III oral CMM (Table 1.) range from 3-to 12 months with metastasis being a significant cause of mortality (Bateman et al, 1994;Freeman et al, 2003;MacEwen et al, 1986;Murphy et al, 2005;Proulx et al, 2003). It is, however, worth noting that not all oral CMMs are clinically aggressive and some early stage canine patients as well as patients with histologically benign lesions can have extended survivals (MacEwen et al, 1986;Smedley et al, 2011).…”
